I saw this written on line by somebody and felt it sit in my heart and took me back to my reasons for being a doctor. I work part time Private to enable me to provide a service I am unable to within the NHS. A service that involve TIME with patients. I also work in Emergency Departments part time and in the past Anaesthesia and Emergency has been my full time occupation – I wish I knew who wrote it so I could give that person the credit.
Somebody asked “how much do you make being a Doctor?”
I replied “How much do I make?”
” I can make holding your hand seem like the most important thing in the world when you are scared’
“I can help your father survive a heart attack”
“I make myself get up at 4am to ensure your mother has the right medications she needs to live..and I work through to 4am to keep her alive and start the day all over again”
“I make you child breathe when they stop”
“I work all day to save the lives of strangers”
“I’ll make my family wait for dinner until I know that your family are taken care of”
“I work weekends, Holidays and through the night because you don’t just get sick Monday to Friday.
“Today I may save your life”
“How much do I make? All I know is..I make a difference“
