Gout is a type of Arthritis. It occurs when there is an excess of a substance called Uric Acid in the body. Normally there is a balance between production in the body and excretion. Increased production can occur due to pre-existing medical conditions, medications but also can build up from alcohol consumption, too much sugar and lack of vitamin C.

Under treated Gout is associated with Chronic Arthritis, Disability and Pain and Kidney Impairment.

There is a strong association between Gout and Chronic Kidney Disease, High blood pressure and Metabolic Syndrome.

There is evidence to suggest that Gout is a risk factor for Cardiovascular disease.

Patients should see a Doctor as soon as possible as treatment is advised early. There is range of options from medications to a steroid injection.

Your Doctor will need to discuss all you risk factors and assess you for chronic disease including high blood pressure, Heart disease and Diabetes.
